Hyperpigmentation & UV Damage

Hyperpigmentation & UV Damage

What is pigmentation, hyperpigmentation and hypopigmentation?

Pigmentation means colouring. Skin pigmentation disorders affect the colour of your skin, hair and eyes. Your skin gets its colour from a pigment called melanin. Special cells in the skin make melanin. People with darker skin types tend to have more melanin in their skin cells than those with lighter skin. When these cells become damaged or unhealthy, it affects melanin production.

When skin cells are healthy, your skin will appear normal and even. However, when skin cells become damaged or unhealthy, extra melanin is produced to help protect your skin. Alternatively, the cells that produce pigment can be damaged, which prevents melanin production. As a result, parts of your skin may turn lighter (hypopigmentation) or darker (hyperpigmentation), both of which are recognisable skin conditions.

What causes skin pigmentation or hyperpigmentation?

Pigmentation, or hyperpigmentation, can occur for a variety of reasons. The effects can also become more obvious as we age, and if left untreated and unprotected can worsen.

Common causes of hyperpigmentation are:

  • over-exposure to the sun
  • genetics
  • hormonal changes
  • medical conditions and trauma to the skin (such as burns or as a result of spots and picking).

Skin pigmentation signs and symptoms

  • Darkened patches of skin that can vary in size and colour (hyperpigmentation)
  • Light patches of skin (hypopigmentation)
  • Losing pigment quickly on several areas of your skin (hypopigmentation)

How can I reduce hyperpigmentation?

UVA and UVB rays can worsen or cause pigmentation caused by excess sun exposure, so it is very important to protect and shield the skin from these harmful rays by wearing an SPF on a daily basis.

Obtaining a healthy lifestyle and effective skincare routine can also help keep the skin clear and create a more balanced complexion. Using quality skin care products containing active ingredients can help alleviate certain hyperpigmentation disorders.

Treatments for hyperpigmentation

pHformula M.E.L.A Skin resurfacing

The unique pHformula powerclay formula used in the M.E.L.A. resurfacing treatments is a powerful hyperpigmentation treatment designed to reduce the accumulation of epidermally (near the skin surface) located melanin. It effectively inhibits the enzymatic activity of tyrosinase, whilst stimulating epidermal differentiation and therefore accelerates epidermal cellular turnover causing the removal of already formed melanin pigment. Due to the innovative highly effective mode of action, significant visible results are obtained with minimal risk.
